Under-Exposed College Football on East Coast

And now for an East coast perspective...

As we enter Week 5 of the college football season, here's a quick post to let you all know how little we East coasters hear about the ranked Utah-relevant teams. It's really a shame, but the media are happy to discuss the big boys (read: BCS) ad infinitum and relegate these great teams to the back page of their online blogs (can a blog have a back page?).
If you watch sports out here on the Eastern seaboard, you'd think there's only one ranked non-BCS team: Boise State. You've gotta give the Broncos credit, they show up just enough to get the job done in big games, and their consistency has rightfully earned them a #3 ranking in the AP Top 25. But the following teams deserve a little press, too.
TCU is currently ranked #5 in both the AP and USA Today polls, and for
good reason. Their combined scoring in 4 games is 178-62, and they're 11th in the nation in rushing yards per game. Since the win against Oregon State in their 1st game of the season, I haven't heard much on them except maybe a 30-sec clip to show a quick touchdown and then move on to the next highlight. Unfortunately, no more big non-conference teams on their schedule, so that'll hurt their visibility. They need gaudy, big-margin victories each week.
Utah is holding steady in the Top 25, currently #13 and #12 in the AP and USA Today polls, respectively. Though they're middle of the pack in yards passing and rushing, their 177-51 point margin puts them Top 10 in both points for and against. I'm hoping the Iowa State, TCU, and Notre Dame games get them a little more spotlight than they've been getting. Just keep rolling out those convincing wins, Utes.
Nevada has strung together some big-name wins and this week broke into the Top 25, so they're getting some exposure on a national level. Having the 6th best yards/game rushing offense in the country gives commentators something concrete to talk about. Unexpected beatdowns on notable names like Cal (52-31) and BYU (27-13) don't hurt either. Only big ticket game left is Boise State, and that's not until Thanksgiving weekend, so they've gotta put up big numbers, too, if they want attention.

BYU doesn't deserve a logo picture or analysis right now. We're fighting and they need to do something that merits my typing time and thought.

AK 2 Stay?

Word on the trusty and reliable 'ole internet is that the Melo to Jersey, AK to Denver, Diaw to Utah disaster is on hold for now. It sounds as though Denver is getting cold feet. And now there is rumor that Melo may be involved in a deal for Andre Igoudala.

This will not come as a surprise, any Jazz fan with half a brain would agree, but I hate, hate , hate , hate the idea of trading AK for the likes of Doris. At one point "Dre" (I like to call him Dre because he is the whitest guy to play like a black guy since...well ever in Utah. Unless you count Curtis Borchardt) was rumored to be traded for Shawn Marion when he was the 3rd guy on a very good 60 win Suns team. An now we are talking about (essentially) Dre for Doris? Straight up? No. This makes no sense. There has has to be something more to this. Has to be. KOC is a smart guy. Possibly the best GM in the NBA so if this did happen then I would begrudgingly put my head down and cheer as hard for Doris as I possible could.

The only good point that I have heard is that the Jazz would then be saving 19 million total after the Jazz get below the luxury tax. But I still don't see how this makes sense. I made the following point on Bonds FB wall:

The idea that it is financially sound move...

It is not financially sound.

1. You lose an expiring contract. Money off the books when the contract expires. Jazz money. Money that the Jazz will save next year. REAL savings

2. Pissed off fan base spends less money on a lower quality team. Now, do not, DO NOT, try and tell me that the numbers will tell you that Doris and AK are similar types of talent. I would suggest that if you are in this camp then you need to stop drinking David Locke Kool-Aid.l

3. Pissed off superstar (D-Will) gets the message loud and clear, leaves Utah for Dallas (or any and every other team in the league that will be courting him as soon as their disgusting and vile hands get a crack at him during free agency in 2012) and...see # 2.

4. That contract will be worth a far superior player than Diaw by the time the trade deadline rolls around. And as a lockout looms teams will be desperate for that type of cap space....see #1.

I am confident that this could be a very special year for the Jazz. They have added the right type of personalities and more important the right type of talent to surround D-Will with. We held onto Boozer right up until the end and, to me, that makes so much less sense than riding the AK era right up until the end. So, C'mon KOC, lets do the right thing and let Dre be a part of the 2011 NBA championship Jazz team. I think we have all earned that.

Class Act: Dwight Howard

We hear so many negative stories about professional athletes these days. Too many, I believe. So when I see a positive one, I'm going to highlight it. Here's a case in point:
Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel wrote a piece about Dwight Howard visiting this little old lady named Kay Kellogg. She has terminal cancer and the only thing on her bucket list was to meet the gigantic Magic center. Maybe it's just well-written PR, but from the article it seems that Dwight genuinely connects with this woman and provides her with a (potentially life-capping) moment of joy. And if you don't get the warm fuzzies from reading it (like I did), then your heart is smaller and colder than the Grinch's.[See the Bianchi article in its entirety here.]

Jazz Get Big Al

The Jazz have pulled off a doozy of a trade. They trade 2 draft picks and the Koo for Al Jefferson, a bona fide 20-10 guy that if you would have told me that we would trade straight up for Boozer, I would have done in a second. The fact that we had to give up so little is ridiculous. Is Kevin O'Conner a genius or is David Kahn just that dumb. This is how I imagine the conversation was like during negotiations:

MARGE
Do you think you can get back the Dental Plan back?

HOMER (Kahn)
Well, that depends on who’s a better negotiator: Mr. Burns or me.

BART (O'Conner)
Dad, I’ll trade you this delicious doorstop for your crummy old Danish.

HOMER (Kahn)
(trading) Done and done. (chuckles, then he realizes) D’oh!

Mark my words...the Jazz will be better with Big Al than they ever were with Boozer.

Letter from owner to Cavs fans

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER 'KING' WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day....

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue....

Dan Gilbert
Majority Owner
Cleveland Cavaliers
